The Role

Role Description

Site Reliability Engineers are mission-critical for Dropbox success. The SRE team has major impact inside of Dropbox engineering through optimizing web services and building our in-house multi-exabyte storage system, Magic Pocket. Check out the Dropbox Tech Blog to learn more!

The Site Reliability Team consists of hybrid systems and software engineers who are responsible and take ownership for management of large scale infrastructure while improving reliability and automation. SREs are integrated within the Platform team, and we're looking for engineers who want to be a part of developing infrastructure software, maintaining it, and scaling it. You will be part of a small family within Dropbox that has a huge impact on the world. As we continue to expand and evolve our footprint, we are looking for passionate SREs to help build and automate our infrastructure. As a Site Reliability Engineer on the Fleet Automation team, you will play a critical role in combining software and systems to monitor and automate Dropbox’s infrastructure. Our team is comprised of different levels of experience and skill sets. Your expertise and fundamental understanding of the physical infrastructure will help ensure Dropbox’s services run efficiently and reliably.

Our Engineering Career Framework is viewable by anyone outside the company and describes what’s expected for our engineers at each of our career levels. Check out our blog post on this topic and more here.

Responsibilities

  • You will build scalable infrastructure to manage metadata for hundreds of billions of files, hundreds of petabytes of user data, and millions of concurrent connections
  • You will design the systems and processes that Dropbox engineers use to manage and deploy their software into production
  • You will automate the server provisioning process to reduce the labor of our networking engineering and datacenter operations teams. Once we plug a new server in, it walks itself through all aspects of provisioning to join the fleet without any human involvement
  • You are expected to bring a voice to the table and partner 100% with the rest of engineering, working together to come up with solutions that meet the needs of the business
  • You will minimize risk of reliability related failure outcomes as pertaining to durability, availability, performance, and correctness

Many teams at Dropbox run Services with on-call rotations, which entails being available for calls during both core and non-core business hours. If a team has an on-call rotation, all engineers on the team are expected to participate in the rotation as part of their employment. Applicants are encouraged to ask for more details of the rotations to which the applicant is applying.

Requirements

  • BS degree in Computer Science or related technical field involving coding (e.g., physics or mathematics), or equivalent technical experience

  • Analytical approach coupled with solid communication skills and a sense of ownership

What We Do

Dropbox is a special place where we are all seeking to fulfill our mission to design a more enlightened way of working. We’re looking for innovative talent to join us on our journey. The words shared by our founders at the start of Dropbox still ring true today. Wouldn’t it be great if our working environment—and the tools we use—were designed with people’s actual needs in mind? Imagine if every minute at work were well spent—if we could focus and spend our time on the things that matter. This is possible, and Dropbox is connecting the dots. The nearly 3,000 Dropboxers around the world have helped make Dropbox a living workspace - the place where people come together and their ideas come to life. Our 700+ million global users have been some of our best salespeople, and they have helped us acquire customers with incredible efficiency. As a result, we reached a billion dollar revenue run rate faster than any software-as-a-service company in history. Dropbox is making the dream of a fulfilling and seamless work life a reality. We hope you’ll join us on the journey.
