Job Description:
What You'll Do
Site reliability engineering(SRE) is a set of principles and practices that incorporates aspects ofsoftware engineering and applies them to IT infrastructure and operations. The main objectives are to create highly reliable and scalablesoftware systems and automate operational processes. SREs focus on availability, latency, performance, efficiency, change management, monitoring, emergency response and capacity planning of their services.
As an Application Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) you will be part of a team of people who are responsible for the availability of several of Discover's most critical applications: our Card and Bank websites and mobile application. You'll tap into your passion for ensuring these websites and mobile applications are highly available for our customers.
The engineer is responsible for oversight on design and implementation of products assigned to their team. Still needs to think things through but has their driver's license. This means they can take user stories and new features from idea to production unattended. Actively manages and escalates risk and customer-impacting issues within the day-to-day role to management.
How You'll Do It

  • Partner with Application Development teams to build resiliency into our critical websites and mobile application
  • Partner with our Application Develop teams to implement service level objectives
  • Partner with our Application Development teams and other SREs to build out end to end observability
  • Implement monitoring, alerting and dashboards needed for our apps
  • Automate operational processes
  • Help to develop our capacity management and performance management tools
  • Help to define the DR plan needed for our critical apps
  • Help to develop a chaos testing process
  • Participate in an on call rotation
  • Develop SRE maturity dashboard to find opportunity areas across application portfolio
  • Analyze, design, code, test, and deploy new user stories and product features with high quality (security, reliability, operations) to production. Understands the software development lifecycle and leverages critical thinking skills to properly evaluate features and functionality.
  • Guides early-career engineers by providing learning tasks as well as work related tasks, directs the work of emerging talent, and helps them continue to grow in their technical skillset through mentorship.
  • Has an oversight on application, system, and architecture design decisions and guides team to achieve key results for products assigned to them.
  • Remediates issues using engineering principles and creates proactive design solutions for potential failures to ensure high reliability of technical solutions.
  • Achieves team commitments (and influence others to do the same) through collaboration with other engineers, architects, product owners and data scientists.
  • Contributes to technology communities of practice at Discover in areas of design-thinking, tools/technology, agile software development, security, architecture and/or data.
  • Creates and enforces IT standards within the system/application infrastructure and compatibility with the architecture of the platform.


Qualifications You'll Need
The Basics

  • Bachelors - Computer Science, Engineering, Informatics, Information Security or Information Technology
  • 3+ Years - Information Technology, (Software) Engineering, or related
  • Internal applicants only: technical proficiency rating of competent on the Dreyfus engineering scale

Bonus Points If You Have

  • 3+ years of experience as an SRE
  • Good understanding of hybrid infrastructure, ideally with AWS
  • Expertise in one or more general purpose programming languages: Python, Go, shell scripting (Unix/Linux), Java
  • Experience in CI/CD pipelines
  • Experience in container technology (openshift, Kubernetes)
  • Expertise in automation tools experience such as Chef, Puppet, Ansible.
  • Expertise in observability tools including APM (DataDog), synthetic monitoring and (Catchpoing), and log aggregation (Elk)
  • Experience in dashboarding tools such as Grafana and Kibana
  • External applicants will be required to perform a technical interview.

Compensation:
The base pay for this position generally ranges between $89,000.00 to $150,200.00. Additional incentives may be provided as part of a market competitive total compensation package. Factors, such as but not limited to, geographical location, relevant experience, education, and skill level may impact the pay for this position.
