Job Summary:

The Director of Software Engineering is responsible for overseeing strategic planning, technical guidance, and operational support across multiple enterprise platforms at DISA including DISAScreen, Integration Gateway, and UCP.  This role acts as a senior advisor and technical authority, ensuring timely and quality software deliverables, and stability of software platforms.  The Director leads cross-functional development teams and maintain robust infrastructure on Azure and with DevOps practices. The Director partners closely with internal product owners, peer development leads, and external vendors to drive the successful delivery of key technology initiatives, while also managing infrastructure and integration oversight, change control, and development prioritization.

Essential functions, responsibilities:

  • Provide technical and delivery leadership across multiple scrum teams and development pods
  • Serve as senior technical advisor and approver for all functional enhancements and architectural recommendations proposed for development activities for multiple software platforms from both internal and 3rd party development teams.
  • Collaborate with product management to align development task assignments across third party vendors and internal DISA Screen resources.
  • Facilitate knowledge transfer between 3rd party vendor(s) and internal DISA Screen teams to ensure long-term maintainability.
  • Accountable for the Azure infrastructure and DevOps for each responsible platform.
  • Continuously look for improvements in our Software Development Lifecycle.
  • Review and provide guidance on approximately 2–3 initiatives weekly to ensure alignment with enterprise architecture and integration best practices.
  • Act as escalation point for integration platform issues, ensuring continuity and stability of Jitterbit PaaS operations.
  • Serve as the Change Advisory Board (CAB) representative for each platform, representing proposed releases and overseeing production deployments.
  • Support junior and senior developers with coaching, hands-on development, and architectural guidance as needed.
  • Lead sprint planning and review sessions in collaboration with the Scrum Master, ensuring backlog grooming and workload balancing are optimized across teams.
  • Contribute directly to software development of high-profile and urgent deliverables or emergency changes as appropriate.
  • Perform reviews and evaluations for direct reports.
  • Assist with training and onboarding of new hires.
  • Assist with career development for direct reports.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Key Skills & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering or related field with 7+ years of related work experience
  • Experience leading global software development teams spanning multiple time zones
  • Significant experience working with C#, .NET, JavaScript, SQL or related programming languages
  • Experience with professional software engineering practices and best practices for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, and continuous integration and testing
  • Experience designing, maintaining, and debugging full stack web applications in Visual Studio
  • Significant experience working with Relational Database Design
  • Excellent object-oriented design skills
  • Strong experience with SQL Server and Database Management Systems
  • Strong critical thinker with problem solving aptitude
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Domain knowledge of background screening and/or drug screening industries preferred.
  • Azure cloud native software development preferred.
  • Proficiency with React or related frameworks preferred.

Work Schedule:

Monday – Friday, 8am – 5pm CST

Overnight Travel Requirements:

  • Infrequent domestic travel may be required for working sessions or leadership meetings.  An offshore site visit for development teams in India may be necessary no more than every other year.
