Responsibilities:

  • Researching basic to complex SALT matters across a range of disciplines (such as income/franchise tax, sales/use tax, gross receipts tax, payroll tax, property tax), using tax research products such as Bloomberg BNA and RIA Checkpoint, with a primary focus on income/franchise tax matters.
  • Preparing written deliverables, such as emails, memos, and Excel matrices, that document client issues and facts, apply relevant guidance, and provide conclusions about SALT matters.
  • Responding to internal and external client and firm associate requests in a timely, accurate, positive and professional manner.
  • Participating in voluntary disclosure and nexus review projects.
  • Communicating with engagement leaders regarding open items or other important matters in a timely manner, and meeting prescribed budgets and deadlines.
  • Performing basic state and local tax calculations using Microsoft Excel.
  • Assisting with the drafting of internal and external articles about existing and emerging SALT topics as needed.
  • Assisting with state tax audit defense matters and with the state tax component of due diligence projects.


Qualifications:
A successful candidate will exhibit:

  • The ability to interact directly with internal and external clients in a professional and timely manner to understand their issues, gather and summarize relevant facts, and provide practical conclusions about SALT issues.
  • The ability to effectively use both primary authority (cases, rulings, statutes, regulations) and secondary authority (tax return instructions, websites) when researching SALT issues.
  • A commitment to continual learning across a range of SALT disciplines.
  • The ability to function well in a fast-paced environment with multiple stakeholders, including representatives from state and local taxing authorities.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to convey technical information in a timely, accurate and concise manner.
  • The ability to identify potential issues and/or opportunities in engagements, and raising them to the engagement leader's attention.
  • Willingness to adapt to a changing environment.
  • Willingness to actively participate in client and community relationship development activities.


Additional Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of experience working in the tax practice of a public accounting firm or similar setting
  • Successfully completed college coursework in intermediate to advanced U.S. federal business and personal income taxation
  • CPA exam eligibility is a plus
  • Attorneys encouraged to apply
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite applications

Wipfli supports equal pay for equal work and values each candidate's unique experiences and skill sets. The estimated pay range for this position is: $64,000 to $114,000. Compensation within the range is determined by a variety of factors including, but not limited to, location, individuals' skills, experience, training, licensure and certifications, business needs and applicable employment laws.
Individuals may be eligible for an annual discretionary bonus, subject to participation rules and based on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, individual and Firm performance.
